Once filed, the Copyright Office typically waits 7-10 months before sending the registration certificates, so the earlier this step is done the better. Your work is still legally protected from the moment of filing, so having the certificate in hand is not mandatory. Submit a finished copy of your work and the front and back covers along with your complete contact information.
Minor changes such as typo correction or small additions can be done to your book without it effecting the copyright. If another new chapter or section is added or a significant change is made that effects the body of work, it must be refiled for a whole new copyright as a newer edition.
